President Félix Tshisekedi for the acceleration of drinking water supply works in Mbuji-Mayi


Kinshasa, December 05th, 2021 (CPA) .- The President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, in his communication, during the 31st meeting of the Council of Ministers which he chaired on Friday, by videoconference, asked the government to speed up the process of available, for the benefit of the National Electricity Company (SNEL), of part of the concession of the Bakwanga Mining (MIBA), with a view to allowing the launch, in Mbuji-Mayi, of works aimed at the production of electricity and drinking water. According to the Minister of Communication and Media, Government Spokesman Patrick Muyaya Katembwe, this is the concession where the Tshiala 1, Lubilanji 1 and 2 hydroelectric power stations are currently installed, owned by MIBA, and called to house the Tshiala II hydroelectric power station, at eight (8) megawatts. This work will be done, he continued, quoting the Head of State, « thanks to funding, in the form of a donation, from the German financial institution » Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau « (KFW), for an amount of 20 million USD as part of the drinking water supply works for which REGIDESO is eligible ”years ago.

Delay in carrying out the work

The President of the Republic regretted the delay recorded in the execution of this work, for the sole fact that the State was not able to cede this part of the concession to KFW, yet the only condition imposed, for 7 years, by this German institution. To avoid any risk of losing this profitable funding, « both for the province of Kasai Oriental and for the MlBA, which will benefit from part of this energy necessary for the relaunch of its activities », the President asked, during the same meeting, to the ministers concerned to « facilitate, on behalf of the State, the attribution of the production concession of Tshiala II, by the Governor of the Province of Kasai-Oriental, to SNEL, for the realization of this ambitious project ”. The Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KFW), the main executing agency for financial cooperation activities in the German aid system since 1960, is active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it is reported, in the microfinance sectors. , the consolidation of peace, water, environment and energy. The Regideso water distribution network in Mbuji-Mayi, initially built to serve a city of a few tens of thousands of inhabitants, is no longer able to meet the water needs of this population, currently estimated at around 2 million inhabitants, it is recalled.
