President Felix Tshisekedi calls on the Congolese media to play a civic role

Kinshasa, January 26th , 2022 (CPA).- The President of the Republic, Felix Antoine Tshisekedi, on Tuesday called on the Congolese media to play a citizen role in their treatment of information, with the aim of helping the country achieve its peace, security and development goals.

The Head of State, anxious to appeal, thereby, to collective participation with a view to building a country that meets the needs of its population, made this recommendation in his speech for the occasion delivered within the framework of the works, in progress at the Center Nganda, of the Estates General of Communication and Media (EGCM), placed under the theme « Congolese media: what prospects in the digital age in the face of the challenges of sustainable development? ».

“The media have an indispensable role to play. Because it is the development of the country that will generate powerful media. So ask yourself also about the civic role that you must play in achieving our objectives of peace, security and development as a country », said President Felix Tshisekedi, addressing the media professionals participating in these meetings.

Constructive criticism expected

For the Head of State, the media have an essential role to play and, to achieve this, DRC needs a responsible, free, plural and viable press without which, he insisted, « democracy and its corollary “rule of law” are only a decoy”.

Better, the 4th power is, in the understanding of the 1st Citizen, a catalyst for development, the country being at a turning point on all levels.

« Through your constructive criticism inherent in DNA of your profession, you would help us to collectively acquire the culture of implementing the large number of resolutions that we take, for the general interest », he underlined.

President Felix Tshisekedi ended his speech by urging media professionals to support, with critical distance, the government of the Republic in its efforts for the recovery of DRC.
