Sexual violence in DRC on the menu of discussions between Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi and Pramila Patten in New York

New York, September 21nd, 2022 (CPA) – The situation of victims of sexual violence in DRC was, on Tuesday, at the center of discussions between the First Lady of DRC, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, and the United Nations Special Representative on sexual violence in conflicts, Pramila Patten, indicates a press release from her Foundation which reached CPA on Wednesday.

According to this press release, Pramila Patten welcomed the commitment of the wife of the Congolese Head of State in the fight against sexual violence linked to conflicts, which is reflected in particular by the creation of a « Fund for reparation of victims » and also through the development and adoption of the draft law establishing the fundamental principles relating to the protection of victims of sexual violence.

“Last year, I was in DRC for the launch of the Reparations Fund. This is an important step in the history of DRC, which not only recognizes the extent of sexual violence in the country, but supports the victims through reparations. It is a preliminary project that will be a model for Africa”, said Pramila Patten, affirming her office’s support for First Lady Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi.

The source notes that other projects that will be the subject of collaboration between these two great female figures were also mentioned during these exchanges, in particular the situation of children born of rape.

The First Lady will be part of the Panel of the framework for the prevention of victims of sexual violence which will be set up by the Office of Pramila Patten, indicates the same source.
