Kolwezi, January 24th, 2023 (CPA) – A course called « High School of Mining and Industry » was opened on Monday at the University of Kolwezi, in Lualaba, with a view to training local expertise in the field of industry and mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

« Today we are creating the High School of Mining and Industry to train students at the request of miners so that when they leave the university, they are oriented towards the professional world, » said the Minister of Higher and University Education (ESU), Muhindo Nzangi, while proceeding to this opening, Monday, in this university institution of the capital of the province of Lualaba.

« During the general assembly of the ESU in September 2021 in Lubumbashi, we had made the state of affairs, and I had asked the participants if they were proud of the products of our universities, which train unemployed. This observation had then led to reflections on the creation of specialised schools, » said the minister, to explain this option taken by the government.

For the acting governor of Lualaba, Fifi Masuka, this initiative « has pushed Congolese society away from this education of university executives unsuited to the needs of the country, thus putting a brake on our development ».

For his part, the rector of the University of Kolwezi, Prof. Yvon Mwenge, expressed his satisfaction for the creation of this course which « materializes the mission of the university, that of responding to the concerns of society.

« The creation of the High School of Mining and Industry is a response to the problems of society, in the sense that it aims to train our young people, strengthens the capacity, reduces the problems of employability in local mining companies and our country, the DRC, » said Professor Mwenge.

This ceremony was closed by an inaugural lecture under the theme: « the challenge of developing expertise in the DRC at a time of energy transition », presented by Professor Emeritus of the Polytechnic Faculty of the University of Mons (Belgium), Jean-Pierre Tshibangu.
