Early Life and High School
Before his star status in college, Sam Hartman excelled at Davidson Day School, where he threw 6,388 passing yards and 69 touchdowns as a team captain at quarterback.
He had to change schools later and transferred to Oceanside Collegiate Academy. This sudden change could deter many young athletes, but it didn’t affect Hartman much. In his senior year, he continued to impress with 3,093 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, plus nine rushing scores.
Shining Brighter at Wake Forest
Hartman made history at Wake Forest. He was the first freshman to start a season opener. The following years were just as eventful and filled with outstanding achievements. During his five years with the Demon Deacons, he set numerous records.
He had the most career passing attempts, completions, yards, and touchdowns at Wake Forest. He was also the top-25 all-time in FBS history for touchdown passes and passing yards and the record holder for 21 career 300-yard passing games in ACC.
A Year at Notre Dame
At 23, Sam Hartman spent his final collegiate season at Notre Dame, following a string of successes. He surpassed all expectations even as a transfer player and broke more records.
As soon as he set foot on the field, he completed 19 of 23 pass attempts for 251 yards with total ease, in addition to four touchdowns. That was his first game against the Navy Midshipmen in Dublin, Ireland.
Professional Career, Awards, and Recognition
In 2024, Sam Hartman signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent. Soon afterward, he was picked by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2024 UFL draft.
Interestingly, his time with the ‘big league’ wasn’t as stellar as his school and college days. Sometimes, it even appeared to be a bumpy ride.
In his relatively short career, Hartman has already gained numerous accolades. The long list of winnings includes the Brian Piccolo Award for “most courageous” player in the ACC, plus multiple bowl game MVP awards.
Additionally, he was the finalist for prestigious recognitions like the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Manning Award.
Sam Hartman’s Brother
Sam Hartman has two brothers. His older brother, Joe, was born on January 17, 1994, and is pursuing a medical degree at the University of Florida.
His other brother, Dimitri, was born on July 4, 1995. Dimitri moved in with the Hartman family at age 15 and later played football at Elon University.
Sam and Dimitri shared a close bond, with Sam looking up to him as a role model. Tragically, Dimitri passed away by suicide in 2015, a loss that deeply impacted Sam.
Since his brother’s tragic death, Sam wore a wristband with Dimitri’s initials, “DA,” and chose the number 10 jersey, which was Dimitri’s number.
Sam opened up about Demitri’s loss in a post on Faith Driven Athlete, writing,
“He may have had a different last name than me, and we may not have shared a bloodline, but he was a brother in every sense of the word. And when you love someone like you love a brother, it hurts just as much not having him here anymore.”
In late 2021, he told ESPN that he had been seeing a therapist to help cope with his anxiety and the pain of losing his brother.
He also mentioned seeing glimpses of Dimitri’s qualities in his Notre Dame teammates, which inspired him to continue playing college football.
